a brief history.

Sonny Sachdeva is a writer based in Toronto with a decade of experience contributing to projects as a reporter, an editor, an analyst, a songwriter, an audio producer, and a number of other roles falling somewhere in between those titles.

Having completed a Master of Journalism at Toronto Metropolitan University's Yeates School of Graduate Studies and a Bachelor of Arts, with a focus on English literature, at the University of Calgary, Sonny currently serves as a Staff Writer for Sportsnet. He primarily contributes longform features focused on the intersection of social issues and sport, as well as beat reporting on the Toronto Maple Leafs, both at home and on the road.

Sonny previously held positions as an Associate Editor for Sportsnet, an NHL News Editor for theScore, a copy editor and print page designer for Postmedia (serving newspapers in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Vancouver), a broadcast intern for Hockey Night in Canada, and a credentialed analyst covering the Calgary Flames.

Having studied sound engineering at Dublin, Ireland's Sound Training College, he's also served as an audio editor for Challenge for Change — producing a multi-episode podcast series in partnership with the National Film Board of Canada and VIA Rail — and has worked as a songwriter contributing to tracks released by Universal Music Group's Island Records and France’s Allo Floride, among others.

Journalism.

Currently a Staff Writer for Sportsnet, my writing for the network includes longform work primarily focused on telling stories of those who exist outside of the usual, expected image that’s long been associated with professional hockey, and stories of the impact marginalized communities have had, and continue to have, on the history of the sport.

Over the course of my time with Sportsnet, I’ve contributed scripts to broadcast pieces for the network, including broadcast essays on the #StopAsianHate movement, as well as Hockey Night in Canada segments celebrating the history of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
